Shopping on the Internet is easy but first, a few words about fraud.  This is probably less likely than having your pocket picked or your handbag snatched, but – forewarned is forearmed.

• Firstly, use a credit card (not a debit card) when you buy online.  This offers greater consumer protection.  Memorise your PIN number; do not write it down.

• Before giving out any personal or credit card details look for the little padlock at the bottom of your Browser indicating that you are on a secure website.
  
  This is also indicated by the website address changing from http:// to https://.  Ths “s” at the end indicates that the page is secure.

• Be careful if you go to a website direct from a link sent to you in an email; better to type the website address in yourself; linking you to a false website is known as "phishing".  Most websites have a “contact us” section and there is no reason why you should not telephone the company to verify its authenticity; at least check it out carefully online.

• It goes without saying that your computer should be protected by a firewall and anti-virus software.  If it is not, then do not shop over the internet until it is properly protected.
