To Get Started with PastFifty Social Net, click on the image above to open PastFifty social Net in a new browser window, then carry on reading below to get further help:
Clicking on the image above brings up the PastFifty Social Net main page. This shows the current members, and any current discussions taking place in the Forum. To get further in to the website and to participate, you need to sign up.
Go to the sign up link at the top of the right hand column and click it. A box appears asking for your email address. Enter your email address and decide on a password. Enter this and click ok. A further box will appear inviting you to add further information. The only box you need answer is to click “yes” to the question: “Are you over fifty?” If you want to answer any of the other questions, you can, but you do not need to. You can always add more details about yourself at a later stage.
You are now a member, and you will see that the right hand column has changed slightly. It has “My Friends” and “My Profile Settings”.
Click “My Profile Settings”. Your Account details show up. Any of these you can change or add to. On the left hand side of this box you will see further subheadings: About Me, Privacy, Email. Click each of these in turn.
In About Me you can add further answers to the original queries whenever you want to.
In Privacy, you can choose who can see and comment on your photos, videos and blogs – when you want to add any of these, which may be much later.
Just to define what is meant by:
“Anyone” – this means anyone who is a member of PastFifty Social Net. Anyone who is not a member can only access the main page, and cannot see, add or comment on anything else.
“My Friends” – these are a subgroup of members who you choose – and who accept – to by your Friends. More about that in a moment.
“Just Me” is self-explanatory. You can store photos, music, etc. on your Page that only you can access.
Now go back to the right hand column and click “My Friends”. If you joined by invitation from another member, that is the only person you will see. If you joined direct, you will see nobody. If you want to invite some of your friends who are not yet members to join, click “Invite more people”.
You will see two columns: Name and Email. Type the name of your friend – you can use either first name, full name or nickname – and then type their email address in the second column. You can send to just one friend or many, and you can change the Subject and the Message as you wish.
When you have finished, click “Send” at the bottom of the page.
Along the top of the page are a series of boxes: Main, My Profile, Members, Forum, Groups, Photos, Videos and Invite.
Let’s look at these in turn:
Click Main. This is where we started. In the Forum box there are probably one or more discussions going on. Click Read More to view, and if you wish to participate, write in the Reply to This box at the end of the discussion and click “Add Your Reply”
Back to the top boxes, and click “My Profile”. Have a look at how your page looks; if you want to change it, click “Edit Page Appearance”. Now we are getting more serious! Probably best to leave this for the time being and go back to it when you are more familiar with the website and have some spare time!
“Edit My Profile” we have looked at earlier. Make changes as and when you choose.
You can also write your own Blog page! This makes you into a journalist! Feel free to experiment.
Back to the top of the page. Click “Members”. This is a very useful page.
Click on one of the Members’ names – just to see your choices. Underneath their picture – if they have uploaded one – you will see:
“Add as Friend” and “Send a Message”
Clicking “Add as a Friend” sends a request to that person inviting them to join your “My Friends” group.
Clicking “Send a Message” is a quick and easy way to send them an instant message. This is one to one communication. If you also want to send them photos, videos, etc., you can use the “Comment Wall” that also appears.
Back to the top of the page. Click Forum. Self-explanatory.
Back to the top of the page. Click Groups. You can create a Group or participate in a Group if there is one that includes one of your hobbies or interests. Maybe you are interested in Family Tree Research, Vintage Cars, Wildlife in China, Boating, etc., etc.
Clicking on Create New Group bring up a box which you can complete. You can create a Group which is accessible to all members or just to those invited to join.
Back to the top of the page. Click Photos. Self-explanatory.
Back to the top of the page. Click Videos. Self-explanatory.
Back to the top of the page. Click Invite. We have already discussed this.
